Dermatology is a field in medicine and surgery that deals with surgical aspects and disorders such as those that affect the hair, nails and the skin. A person who specializes in studying dermatology is known as a dermatologist. Dermatologists deal with cosmetic problems that affect the hair, skin and nails in a more detailed manner.

People studying dermatology specialize in various sub-fields, which include cosmetic dermatology, derma pathology, immune-derma pathology, mohs surgery, pediatric dermatology and teledermatology. In all these sub-fields, dermatologists deal with the treatment of diseases affecting the skin, hair and nails.

Cosmetic dermatologists have been leaders in the dermatology since they aim at improving how a person looks. They train on how to use fillers, Botox and hair removal surgery. They also perform procedures related with cosmetics such as face-lifts and liposuction. They offer medications for the skin to prevent damage from chronic exposure, weather, age and life style.

There are also those who specialize in derma pathology, which involves studying the skin at a microscopic level. They analyse various causes of skin diseases at a cellular level by recognizing their appearances, anatomic distribution and behavior. A dermatologist wanting to specialize in pathology completes one year of dermatology fellowship before proceeding for a pathology class, which takes six months.

Immunodermatology is also another field of dermatology and those specialized in it are known as immunodermatologists. It deals with treatment of immune-mediated diseases, which affect the skin such as lupus, bilious pempighoid, pempighus vulgarism and other skin disorders. Most immunodermatologists may have their own immunopathology labs.

Mohs surgery is also another field in dermatology that offers highest potential of skin cure, about 100%,even if it has been treated using other methods. The procedure of treating was developed by Dr Frederic E Mohs in the early 1930s, is known as CCPDMA processing, and is only done by qualified physicians in surgery and pathology. It involves excision of skin cancer using a sparing technique that allows 100% of intraoperative assessment of deep tumor and peripheral margins. They receive training on how to use CCPDMA procedure during dermatology residency or they may join American Society of Mohs Surgery or fellowship programs offered by American college of Mohs surgery.

A physician can also qualify to be a pediatric dermatologist by simply completing dermatology and a pediatric residency program or complete a post fellowship program. In pediatric dermatology, dermatologists deal with treatment of diseases such as hereditary skin disorders, neonates, psoriasis, vitiligo, skin disorders that a child is born with, warts and other difficulties of a pediatric population. Most pediatric dermatologists specialize in diagnosing and treating children, including newborn and infants up to their adolescent stage.

Teledermatology is another field in dermatology that deals with application of telemedicine and e-health. It involves exchange of medical information via various kinds of media. It involves viewing of the skin conditions over a large distance to provide information and second opinion services for experts or use the follow up in treating individuals with chronic skin conditions. Teledermatologist can reduce time wastage by simply sending via e-mail digital images of a lesion from the patient to seek medical advice of a condition from a specialist.
